What is UPI?

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is a real-time payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). It allows you to transfer money instantly between bank accounts using just a smartphone — no need to remember lengthy account numbers or IFSC codes.

UPI works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including bank holidays. Transactions are typically free for most users and complete within seconds.

How Does UPI Work?

UPI links your bank account to a unique identifier called a UPI ID (also known as a Virtual Payment Address or VPA). This looks like: yourname@bankname (for example, ramesh@sbi or priya@oksbi).

When you send or receive money, you use this UPI ID instead of sharing your bank account details. This makes transactions both convenient and secure.

How to Set Up UPI: Step by Step

  1. Download a UPI app — such as BHIM, PhonePe, or Google Pay from the Play Store or App Store.
  2. Register with your mobile number — this number must be linked to your bank account.
  3. Verify your mobile number — the app sends a verification SMS automatically.
  4. Add your bank account — select your bank from the list; the app fetches your account details automatically.
  5. Set your UPI PIN — enter the last 6 digits of your debit card number and its expiry date, then create a 4 or 6-digit UPI PIN. This PIN is used to authorize every payment.

How to Send Money via UPI

  • Open the UPI app and tap Send Money or Pay.
  • Enter the recipient's UPI ID, mobile number, or scan their QR code.
  • Enter the amount and an optional note (e.g., "rent").
  • Confirm and enter your UPI PIN to complete the transaction.
  • You'll receive a success notification and transaction ID instantly.

Safety Tips for UPI Transactions

  • Never share your UPI PIN with anyone — banks and UPI companies will never ask for it.
  • Beware of fake QR codes — always verify the merchant name shown before paying.
  • You do NOT need to enter your PIN to receive money — if someone asks you to enter a PIN to "receive" money, it is a scam.
  • Enable transaction limits and notifications in your bank's settings.
  • Only use apps downloaded from official app stores.
  • Report suspicious activity immediately to your bank or the NPCI helpline at 1800-120-1740.

UPI Transaction Limits

The standard UPI transaction limit is ₹1 lakh per transaction per day for most banks, though some banks may allow up to ₹2 lakh. Certain categories like taxes and healthcare may have higher limits. Always check with your specific bank for the applicable limits.

UPI has transformed how India pays — from buying vegetables at a local vendor to paying utility bills. Once you set it up, it becomes an indispensable everyday tool.
