What is DigiLocker?
DigiLocker is a cloud-based digital document storage service launched by the Government of India under the Digital India initiative. It allows citizens to store, access, and share their important documents digitally — anytime, anywhere — using a smartphone or computer.
Documents stored in DigiLocker are legally equivalent to original physical documents under the IT Act, 2000 and are accepted by government agencies, banks, educational institutions, and more.
Key Benefits of DigiLocker
- Access all your documents from a single app — no more carrying originals everywhere
- Documents are government-verified and digitally signed
- Completely free to use for all Indian citizens
- Reduces paperwork and the risk of losing original documents
- Accepted at traffic checkpoints (driving licence, RC book via mParivahan)
- Linked with over 1,600+ issuers including CBSE, UIDAI, transport departments, and universities

Types of Documents in DigiLocker
1. Issued Documents (Pulled from Government)
These are documents directly fetched from government databases and are automatically verified. Examples include:
- Aadhaar card (UIDAI)
- Driving licence and vehicle registration certificate (RC)
- PAN card (Income Tax Department)
- Class 10 and 12 mark sheets (CBSE, state boards)

2. Uploaded Documents (Self-Uploaded)
You can also upload your own scanned copies of documents (up to 1GB of storage). These are stored but may not carry the same verification status as issued documents.
How to Add Documents to DigiLocker

- Share via link: Generate a shareable link for a specific document to send via WhatsApp, email, or any messaging platform.
